Harmonic Patterns: Recognizing Gartley, Bat, Crab and Butterfly
Harmonic patterns are advanced trading patterns that use Fibonacci retracement and extension levels to identify potential reversal points. They are named after animals due to their visual resemblance.
What are Harmonic Patterns?
Harmonic patterns are geometric price structure patterns that use Fibonacci ratios. Each pattern consists of four price movements (X-A-B-C-D) and specific Fibonacci ratios between them.
Key Harmonic Patterns
1. The Gartley Pattern
- X to A: Upward move
- A to B: Retracement to 61.8% of XA
- B to C: Move up to 38.2%-88.6% of AB
- C to D: Move down to 78.6% of XA
2. The Bat Pattern
- A to B: Retracement to less than 61.8% of XA
- C to D: Move down to 88.6% of XA
3. The Crab Pattern
- C to D: Move down to 161.8% extension of XA
4. The Butterfly Pattern
- A to B: Retracement to 78.6% of XA
- C to D: Move down to 127.2% or 161.8% extension of XA
How to Trade Harmonic Patterns
Step 1: Identify the Pattern
Look for the X-A-B-C-D structure.
Step 2: Wait for Point D
Point D is the reversal point.
Step 3: Seek Confirmation
Look for reversal candlestick patterns, RSI divergence, or support/resistance.
Step 4: Entry and Stop Loss
- Entry: at point D after confirmation
- Stop Loss: just above (or below) point X
- Targets: 38.2% and 61.8% retracement of CD
Conclusion
Harmonic patterns are a powerful but complex trading method. With patience and practice, they can be a valuable addition to your trading arsenal.
