Trading Sessions Guide
The forex market is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. But not every hour is the same. Some sessions offer much more opportunities than others.
The Three Main Sessions
1. Asian Session (Tokyo)
- Time: 00:00 - 09:00 GMT
- Characteristics: Calm, low volatility
- Best pairs: JPY pairs, AUD/USD, NZD/USD
2. London Session
- Time: 08:00 - 17:00 GMT
- Characteristics: Highest volume, lots of movement
- Best pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP
3. New York Session
- Time: 13:00 - 22:00 GMT
- Characteristics: High volatility, lots of news
- Best pairs: USD pairs, EUR/USD, USD/JPY
Session Overlaps
The best time to trade is when two sessions overlap. There are two important overlaps:
London + Tokyo Overlap
- Time: 08:00 - 09:00 GMT
- This overlap is short and offers limited extra volatility.
London + New York Overlap
- Time: 13:00 - 17:00 GMT
- This is the most active period of the day. The highest volume and largest movements occur here.
When To Trade
Best Time
The London + New York overlap (13:00 - 17:00 GMT) is the best time to trade. There is a lot of volatility and liquidity.
Good Time
The London session (08:00 - 17:00 GMT) is also excellent. Especially the morning hours offer many opportunities.
Lesser Time
The Asian session is calmer. This can be good for range trading but offers fewer opportunities for trend traders.
Bad Time
Friday afternoon after 17:00 GMT. The market gets calmer and spreads may widen for the weekend.
Tips
- Adapt your trading hours to your strategy
- Day traders: focus on the London + NY overlap
- Swing traders: less dependent on sessions
- Avoid trading around weekends and holidays
Conclusion
The best time to trade forex is during the London + New York overlap. But your strategy ultimately determines when you can best trade.
