Support and Resistance Levels
Support and resistance are the two most fundamental concepts in technical analysis. Almost every successful trader uses them, but not everyone truly understands how to apply them effectively.
What Is Support?
Support is a price level at which demand is strong enough to prevent further price declines. When the price approaches this level, buyers tend to step in because they perceive the price as attractive.
It's important to know that support is not an exact line, but rather a zone. The more often the price bounces at a level, the stronger it is.
What Is Resistance?
Resistance is precisely the opposite: a level at which supply is strong enough to prevent further price increases. Sellers come into play here because they view the price as high.
How to Determine Support and Resistance
- Look for reversal points: Mark all clear highs and lows on your chart.
- Confirm with volume: The more volume at a level, the stronger it is.
- Use multiple timeframes: What is visible on a higher timeframe carries more weight.
- Round numbers: Price levels like 1.1000 or 1.5000 are psychological barriers.
Common Mistakes
The biggest mistake beginners make is treating support and resistance as impenetrable walls. In reality, they are zones where the price can pause or reverse. A break through resistance often turns that level into new support.
Your Strategy
Always wait for confirmation before entering or exiting a trade. A candlestick pattern, a volume spike, or another technical signal can help you trade with more confidence.
